Happy New Year

We are entering our fifth year living in the new normal that was established when the COVID-19 pandemic reset expectations for the working world and society at large. Those expectations continue to evolve during this extended transition, and I feel that we are now in an era in which individuals, for better or for worse, are assessed and appreciated based on the true value of their contributions.

The pandemic taught us that it is possible to live and work in an ecosystem that minimizes physical human interaction and shuns inefficiency. Remote work as a common practice was born from that ideal, but I have both sensed and witnessed firsthand an overcorrection and shift toward complacency—and, dare I say, laziness—within the workforce. For example, even our partner hospitals have limited staff working on-site. I appreciate that the incoming US presidential administration’s proposed Department of Governmental Efficiency announced an end to remote work for federal employees, which is a step in the right direction.

Concurrently, businesses worldwide are embracing Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a race to establish automated solutions for various roles and responsibilities. In the future, AI will take over jobs that can be done remotely without direct manual operation, while those positions that require human hands, hearts and wisdom will remain. This will usher in a new era that elevates those individuals who can contribute the most value.

As AI becomes more widespread, I also anticipate that our future society will be shaped with iterative verifications and adjustments to determine how to take responsibility and process errors in AI performance, and whether a job requires human oversight and intervention when problems occur. From this AI-driven social advancement, my wish is that we can build a society that will appreciate the true value of all human beings.

I founded Sakura Lifesave Associates, our medical and legal consultancy company, with the mission of making the world a better place, and we have been able to help people save lives and assist with births across borders. As 2024 marked our company’s 20th anniversary, I vow to dedicate myself to the work that only I, as a human being, can do. I would like to conclude this heartfelt greeting by wishing each of you great health and happiness in the new year.
